12-bit JPEG

Postby bomber » Sat Oct 24, 2009 4:11 am

Newbie question

Just recently purchased a plustek 7600i using silverfast V6,6,0r6

Using 48 bit HDR Colour the file gets saved as a 12-bit JPEG file. (Even provides a warning) Once this is done some windows based viewers will not open the file. Is there somewhere within the file saving options (in silverfast) to save as a more supported version such as 8 bit? If so how?

Any help would be appreciated! 8)

Dear bomber,

JPEG is 8 bit standard. There are some forms of Jpeg in 12 bits but as you correctly point out not all viewers can read that file format. The best option in this case is to save your files as TIFF because it does not make any sense to scan in 48 bits HDR (16 bits per channel) to save it as a 12 bit file.

Cheers
