cropping of negatives and final scan resolution

In the silverfast work flow for scanning of negatives, step one is cropping. If the selected resolution is 7200 dpi, If you crop and select the entire neg, then the pixel count should be as selected. What happens if you crop and only select a portion eg half of the negative, what would be the pixel dimension of the final scan? Is the scanner able to refocus the portion of the negative to cover the whole CCD sensor or does the scanner just ignore the part of the image not selected in the crop and end up with a smaller effective pixel count. The scanner I am using is the plustek 7600 ai.
