Noise problems

Postby pvh1987 » Sun Aug 30, 2009 9:48 pm

For about two weeks ago I started using SilverFast SE Plus with my Canon 8400F flatbed scanner.

I have problems with noise in my scans. Usually, when using multi-exposure or multi-sampling I get rid of most of the noise, but it is only good enough for well exposed slides and negatives.

If I have an underexposed slide, I get a lot of noise in the darker areas. Using multi-exposure or multi-sampling, the scan gets much better, but still with a lot of noise.

If i have an overexposed negative, I get a lot of noise in the lighter areas. I am not sure if it is really overexposed - the print looks just fine, the frame on the negative strip is very "dark" with little details compared to the most other frames.

It does not make any big difference even when using 16x multi-sampling. The color histogram does not look complete compared to the good scans.

Is there a software solution to this problem?

By the way - Is there anyway to use exactly the same scanning settings for every frame when scanning strips of the same film type? I want some kind of easy way of making a high quality photo archive with consistent result - the only thing i want to do after scanning is cropping to 3:2 and resizing to a specific resolution.

Dear Louis,

if even 16x Multi-Sampling does not get rid of the noise I really doubt that something else would work.

You can save predefined frames with different settings in the Ai version of SilverFast.
