LaserSoft Imaging

I am using Silverfast SE and scanning B&W negatives in 16bit Greyscale HDR mode, usually with ME. I often get a horizontally compressed histogram that makes contrast control more difficult. A friend has Silverfast AI and has the option to scan in 16 bit Greyscale mode. What is the difference? Since I am not using the stand-alone HDR software, would it be an advantage to upgrade to AI to scan in 16 bit Greyscale?

The difference is basically that while scanning in 16 bits HDR mode you will obtain an unmodified 16 bits TIFF RAW file which can only be opened by SilverFast HDR or Photoshop for further modification (possibly this type of files can be opened by other applications not mentioned here, in such case please ask every software manufacturer).
When you digitize your film using 16 bits greyscale mode (not HDR), you can make adjustments to your pictures before the end scan and they will be present in the end file.
