Scans often too bright

Hi all,

I have a Plustek 7200 scanner with Silverfast 6.4.4r7 software. Quite often when I prescan, the image comes out far too bright. I set the film to exactly the same as what I'm scanning (eg Kodak Gold 200) and that often makes the problem worse. Even sliding the brightness scale all the way down doesn't help. I have to change the film type to get the image somewhere close to acceptable and then I find the colours are often washed out.

Can anyone tell me if there's a way round this? I appreciate that negatives can deteriorate over time but other scans from the same film are often ok.

Thanks for any help,

Matt.

Have you tried expert mode in Negafix ? - you can adjust the profile as you wish.

The problem with this version is that it gives you no way to profile the density of the scanner. If you go to the manual pg 40 it refers to a button on the Tool Bar (Automatic density*: This function allows the scanner to analyse
the density range of the image prior to scanning and adjust the
hardware correspondingly.) this option is not available in V6.4.4R7
so if you download a demo of 6.5 either you will have that function or in my case with epson 3200 a dialoge box called picture settings. In my case the exposure slider was so far overexposed that half of the histogram was missing , so i moved the slider to show the histogram shows, And when i go back to the registered version V6.4.4R7 the scanner was profiled and scans wer'e ok.

My question to Silverfast is that i payed almost $400 and two years and have never got a decent scan until now. I have a ticket number with them [Ticket2008020703338] where i sent screenshots of the problem and they have not replied. I found the problem by accident and am expecting Silverfast to say the solution is to pay for a upgrade. Try the demo and see if this fixes your problem. The demo may fix this problem for V6.4.4R7 but the solution is this version never worked to without being able to profile scanner anyway on my scanner at least.

Dear qeeqaig

It is possible that your Negafix profile is not working correctly, as Degrub correctly points out, you can edit the profiles easily, Please open the "expert dialog in the negafix" window by clicking on the button with the "professor" (see next picture)

Image

Once you open the dialog you will click the "curves" tab to open the curves tool (See: "curvestool.jpg")

Image

then you will select the "pencil" to activate the curves (See: "pencilcurves.jpg")

Image

Then you will be able to modify the curve, either completely or by pressing the "CTRL" key and dragging a specific point of the curve to modify a determined portion of the curve (see: "activepointcurve.jpg")

Image

Please modify the upper right part of the curve and drag slightly to the right, making sure you do not get an abrupt variation in any of the lines of the curve (as seen in the next picture).

Image

Once you got the curve up to the point you have the gray tones you can save your profile and then press the pencil to continue with your tasks as usual.

In this way you can adjust your profiles to the one that fits best your needs.

Kind regards
