From a new user, how do I set a resolution for batch scanning at 300 d.p.i. without fiddling endlessly with the Q-factor etc. settings?
The manual I have printed from the S/fast disk says (P. 34) that I can display the scan resolution by pressing the CTRL key, but this doesn't seem to work. The illustration shows what appears to be a sliding scale for adjusting resolution, which would presumably address my problem. Unfortunately, this scale doesn't appear.
Any help appreciated.

Setting resolution in SilverFast
If you read the chapter about the necessary scan resolution,(at the end of the
manual) you will get agood idea about the relationship between Q-factor, scaling and output resolution.
If you want 300 dpi as your final resolution for a scan without scaling, you can just use the resolution slider or type the number into the resolution edit field.

Thanks for the reply, which is fine, and says just what the manual says. Unfortunately, the Silverfast screen doesn't agree with either you or the manual. No resolution slider appears on my version of Silverfast, there's only a percentage size factor slider where the resoloution slider should be. If, as advised by the manual, you press <Ctrl>, a red cross sort of symbol appears on the image, but nothing else.
I've no problems with scanning software on the two flatbeds I operate - both professional models.

OK, so I can see what's happened here. The manual on the installation disk relates to the wrong version, presumably 5x.
The installation disk is labelled 4x whilst the credits say V5. v 4.1.3. What a mess!
Whichever version it is I've got obviously doesn't have the D.P.I. slider, which isn't very helpful for us having to do complicated calculations for every scan.
And why was the wrong manual loaded on the disk? Get your act together Silverfast.

That sounds familiar! I have Epson 2450 that came with SF SE and I upgraded to Ai. Whoops, wrong wording, I bought the Ai version because you can't upgrade!
It comes with a booklet not a manual that tells to look for a file that's not there but it's easy to figure out the right file because it's the only one in the folder. The disc has a autorun file that opens up with options: Install SF SE or SF Ai Demo!
Another case of the wrong files on the disc.

Latest SilverFast Manual / Quickstart always on the web
With so many versions supporting more than 150 scanner and camera models it is a hopeless undertaking to be up-to-date with the
documentation on the CDs all the time for more than 6 languages. This is especially true for a bundled version as in the case of the
Epson Expression 2450, because this has been reworked and produced by
Epson themselves.
To be safe, download the latest version of the
manual or Quickstart from our web site.

This isn't the SF SE that came bundled with the Epson 2450 I'm refering to! It's the SF Ai v5.51 that I bought that appears to have a autorun file that belongs on the SF SE disc.
Speaking of SF SE bundled with the Epson 2450. Why are so many people at LSI confused about upgrading from SE to Ai? Actually, you can't upgrade! Your tech. support people have posted here that you can for the difference in price. I called and even ordered it for the difference in price only to find out later that I was billed for full price.
I've seen it in a catalog, where it stated that you can upgrade up from SF SE.
