48 bit format

Hi,
I scanned some slides with sF Ai (Digitdia4000) in 48 bit color and 48 bit HDR mode.
HDR mode seems to be ok: SF HDR (demo version up to now only) can read the files, also some fileviewers as MS, IrfanView and some LInux viewers.
48 bit color file are not readable by most viewers at all or show black pictures only; not even SF HDR accept these files.
Is this behaviour due to my handling error or intended?
What the 48 bit mode can be used for?
Tnx for an answer
