unsharp? even for downsized images? why?

I've read that all digital photos need to be sharpened to reach their best but I don't understand this logic.

if I'm downsizing a photo; eg from 8 megapixels to 4 megapixels; wouldn't the image sharpen as a result of the process?

if sharpening is recommended for all photos, what would a typical setting be?

regards,
Gregory

Hello Gregory,

The image resolution and image sharpness don't have the relationship you might think. Sharpness has more to do with the contrast between pixels Vs the number of pixels.

In general there is not a fixed amount of sharpening because each picture is different, so you have to judge each one. You might be able to find settings that work well for a batch of pictures.
