Color Management

Hi!
Using the german version of SilverFast please excuse if I use incorrect terms...
I have one Question:
What is the difference between using RGB as output color profile and LAB?
Adobe claims that RGB and Adobe RGB1998 are device-indepndent profiles like LAB. The input data are Color negatives, so this is a RGB device with its limitations. The conversion to LAB results in no better quality. Now I use the output data of Silverfast to modify in Adobe Photoshop, print out or send it to Kodak.
Photoshop recognises RGB as well as LAB and the conversion to CMYK probably makes no difference if the input profile is RGB or LAB.
Please explain to me which is the best setting for my needs!
Thanks in advance!
