IT-8 Ektachrome, Elite Chrome??

Postby michaelmueller » Tue Sep 21, 2004 1:33 pm

I am using HDR and calibrated with the Ektachrome Professional IT-8 target. But most of our slides are "Kodak Elite Chrome 200".
Are there existing Elite targets or would it be o.k. to use the Ektachrome Professional target?

Dear Mr Mueller

it is not relevant in terms of color fidelity if your film material differs from the material of the target.

The accompanying reference file describes the physical qualities of a given target. With it the color read by the scanner can be interpreted and compared to the high standard of laboratory equipment which read the color values and generated the data for the ref file.

After a calibration process SilverFast then does know "how your scanner is seeing color(s)".

Thus is it not relevant how these colors are depicted on this or that paper you are using afterwards with your calibrated scanner.

However, buying a higher quality (and generally more expansive) target usually gives you the advantage of a greater lifespan of your target.

In short: Yes, you can use your target for your Kodak Elite film material (and others).

It makes a big difference if you are crossing film families eg. Kodachrome to Ektachrome, but not that much difference within a family of films. My understanding is as long as you are working with essentially the same dye sets, there will not be that much difference.
