film cleaning advice, rejoining film strips

Postby Gregory C » Thu Mar 04, 2004 5:21 pm

can anyone advise me?

1. much of my negative film has marks on it. they're not scratches and they don't seem to wipe off easily. ICE doesn't clear them either. I suspect that they're mold. does anyone know how to clean the mold off the film leaving the film spotlessly clean?

2. I have a roll adapter but much of my film was developed before I attained the adapter and is therefore in strips of 4 or 6 frames. has anyone ever tried to rejoin strips of film to recreate the whole roll of film? super glue perhaps? using the roll adapter would be far more efficient than swapping strips of film all day/night long.

regards
Gregory

Try doing a Google Groups search with the following:

cleaning 35mm slides mold

You will find some information there. Any cleaning procedure involves some risk so you should scan your slides first before trying any cleaning.

Transparency and Negative Cleaning

I had the task of cleaning several hundred slides from the 70's that I needed to scan. The slides had mold and fingermarks. I used "PEC-12 Archival Photographic Emulsion Cleaning Solution" and it worked perfectly.

It is available in 4oz spray bottle for about $20CAN and you can get special wipes to use with it. I cleaned a vast majority of the slides and I still have lots left. A little goes a long way.

You may have to order through a photographic lab as it is not intended for home use.
