Problems with scanning negatives

I have been unsuccessful in scanning my negatives with SilverFast. It seems I cannot access the add images button in the Job Manager. It shows itself as there but I cannot click on it at all. Therefore I can't follow the directions that explain step-by-step how to scan negatives. Please help. I have been struggling with this for days. Could it be that my software is defective?
