Multiple sampling

I am uncertain whether or when to use the multiple scanning option in SF. The manual states that it reduces "hissing" in the shadow area. I don't know what this refers to, and don't know whether I should not be using the multiple scanning ability. And if it is to be used, how does one determine the number of samplings chosen. Thanks.

If you display your image at 100% on your monitor, look in the darkest areas and you may see colored pixels where it should be black. That is the "hissing" or noise that multisampling can reduce. It is produced by the sensors and the electronics in the scanner. Multisampling algorithms assume this noise is random and thus can average it out over many scans of the same point. How many times to sample ? enough so that the image looks good to you without taking more time than you want to spend scanning.
