Silverfast AI vs HDR for colour neg + film scanner

Postby RZS » Thu Jan 23, 2003 8:35 pm

Hi,

I have a registered copy of HDR that I use with an Epson 2450. I use v**s**n to produce high bit raw files. I bought HDR instead of AI because I want to rent film scanners to archive work and thought it would be easier to do the raw scans, return the scanner, then work on the files at home. I only scan colour negatives.

I've read recently on the internet that film scanners (not flatbeds) expose the red green and blue differently to compensate for the negative mask. Is there a difference in quality, when using a film scanner with colour negs, when doing the negative conversion *during the scan* (eg using silverfast AI) versus doing the conversion *after the scan* (eg using HDR)? Is there going to be a noticable improvement in colour balance, noise, tonal gradation, etc, when using silverfast AI over HDR?

Thanks

RZS

Given that you use raw data files (HDR) there is no difference between what Ai does and what HDR does. Both programms use the same data.
