Tiff Image Appears to Contain 2 layers

When I scan a colour negative at high resolution (3600 dpi) with my Plustek scanner, I usually save in TIFF format.

The resulting files are quite large (50Mb approx) which is OK.

If I open them using GIMP I find there are 2 layers, one containing the full size image, and the other approx 1/8 size.

Is this normal?

What is the rationale for this?

Dear user,

yes that is normal SilverFast HDR (Studio) and other applications can use that to open images more quickly and it is used for faster thumbnail generation.

Kind regards,
Arne

Dear user,

Yes in the preferences' Special tab. The option is called HiRePP.

Kind regards,
