best resolution when scanning b/w negatives

Hi,
I scan 4x5 negatives and now also 2 1/4x2 1/4 negatives both are B/w I use the Epson 760 flatbed scanner
I tend to stick with the "300" setting but often wonder if pushing the limits to ?? highest level will in fact yield more useful info. I also wonder if I should be using a different setting for the 2 1/4 neg
I seem to recall that at some point I would be getting more PPI but not necessarily better information.
Another related issue is understanding what I really get by making an HDR raw scan which I then convert using the silverfast hdr
Thanks for any pointers or explanations.
