ICC Profiles and negative scans.

Postby tim_m » Tue Apr 05, 2016 9:13 pm

Hello Silverfast,

I have been thinking about profiling scanners for colour accuracy and negative scans. I understand that you cannot have IT8 profiles for accurate colour negative inversions for various reasons but for the same reasons that we profile for positive colour accuracy why are negative scans not adjusted as positives before the inversion process?

The positive is profiled due to inherent inaccuracies in the scanner. The profile overcomes many of these inaccuracies thus resulting in scans which appear true to the positive. So surely the same can be done with a negative at this stage. I can scan a negative as a positive with IT8 corrections so why do we not apply these corrections before inverting the file?

Although Negafix is very effective it seems odd to apply a generic profile to a scan that has inherent inaccuracies due to the scanner. Does this make sense or am I missing something here? Surely we want the most true to life scan before we make any inversions or adjustments?

Best,

Tim

Dear Tim,

The NegaFix Profiles are based on certain input values and creating a new base profile would also require recreating all NegaFIx profiles.

Kind regards
