How to scan a target - what's with XPs profile assignment?

As far as I know the best and only way to scan a target (for later profile generation with iphoto or LittleCMS) is to turn off all color correction both in SilverFast as in Photoshop.

Also I suppose that there must not be applied any automatic in SilverFast. All color settings should be reset.
Am I correct with this?

But what is with a profile assigned to my scanner in Windows 2000/XP's system controls. All imaging hardware as monitors, scanners etc. can (and mostly will) be assigned a profile there.
Should I unsaaign it in general? Or does it not affect my SilverFast/Photoshop-workflow?

Any clarification would be appreciated!

Now here is another two points to this which need clarification:

1. What about SilverFast's automatic exposure (the sun-icon beside the preview window. Should it also be turned off for scanning a target?

2. Why - if all the settings are reset and color correction is off - can I see a difference in the colors shown in the preview window outside the selected frame and inside? The colors outside look more saturated.
Greys are not affected.
