I'm using SilverFast SE to digitize some old family photos and I don't have much knowledge about digital imaging.

I'm unsure as to why there are places for selecting ppi. I have typed in the first value (where it says Preset) to be 800ppi. Will putting the Resolution Slider above 800ppi (say to 1600ppi) actually make a difference in terms of quality, or should I keep it at 800ppi as well?

Dear Nick,

The preset can be used to determine the scan resolution.
Together with the output or zoom value in the scan dimensions expert settings it is used to calculate the optimum scan resolution.

For example set the preset to your print/display resolution then set the output to the desired size.
You will get a scan of exactly those dimensions.
The slider for the scan resolution will automatically be set accordingly.

I have a question about this, too. I am scanning 35 mm negatives for archiving, but, not necessarily for printing, and want to do so at 1200 or 2400 lines per inch, and don't care about target or printing size.

I don't seem to be able to set those in the drop-down box, or type them in by hand (it only lets me type in 3 digits, so 2400 becomes 240), so, it seems the only way to get that is to use the slider and slide it to 1200 or 2400.

Is this the proper way to do what I'm trying to do?

Dear customer,

The value you can enter in the preset depends on the scaling value in the expert settings (Gearwheel button).

But you can directly drag the resolution slider to the intended value if you do not want to calculate a print size.
Otherwise set the scaling to 100% before you enter the preset.
