Hi there,
I'm a new user of Silverfast and a new member on the forum, I'm running a small company (part time) helping people the save their cultural heritage. I live in Sweden and using Nikon V ED, Epson V700.
As today, the Kodachrome IT8 targets are hardly available anymore (or extensivly overpriced), I'm wonder if there are any members/user that could consider renting a target to me for a day (plus shipping) so that I could profile my scanners.
Please let me know if a good idea, I think there are more users that are interested in profiling there scanner for Kodachrome.
Another solution for Silverfast would be if a customer calibrated their scanner with a standard IT8 target and then sent the resulting file to Silverfast, then they could calculate a new Kodachrome target file based on the difference between the customer file (Silverfast would also need the original reference file for the target) and Silverfast's measured Kodachrome targets?
Best Regards,
Mikael

Re: Renting a Kodachrome IT8 target.
Dear Mikael,
I only know that ScanDig in Germany still sells Kodachrome Targets.
So far I have not heard about anyone renting them.
A standard target unfortunately can not be used as a base for a Kodachrome profile due to the special properties of the Kodachrome emulsion.
Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

Hi Arne and thanks for the reply,
Why shouldn't it be possible, when you calibrate a scanner using a Kodachrome IT8 target you are taking measurements of the same physical properties as when you are using a standard IT8 target (ie transmittance for the three colour channels)?
So if you profiling a scanner with both targets and using the knowledge of the differences between them, and a measured standard target (plus the truth file) from a customer, it should(?) be possible to calculate a better profile than the generic one Kodachrome profile in Silverfast.
Probably this needs to be done per scanner modell.
Yes, ScanDig seems to have Kodachrome targets, but they asking for 600 euro for them and thats almost robbery.
Theres a rather big community still outhere still interested in scanning Kodachromes with ultimate results, so everyone should benefit of a solution even if it's not as good as using a Kodachrome target directly.
Best Regards,
Mikael

Re: Renting a Kodachrome IT8 target.
Dear Mikael,
The Kodachrome film reacts slightly different based on the lamp in each individual scanner.
So such a calculation would ignore the individual properties of the scanner which it is supposed to measure.
SilverFast does provide a standard profile for scanning Kodachromes.
So a Calibration is not required to scan these Films.
Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
