Hi
I am running silverfast Ai studio 8 on a mac pro laptop os 10.6.8 my scanner is an epson 4870 photo
Silverfast crashes every time I try and access the transparency mode it seems to be functioning in reflective mode
Any suggestions as to the cause is it a hardware issue or software. I will uninstall and re install to see if that fixes the problem
any advice would be appreciated

Normally we do not answer tech support questions here.
But this matter comes up frequently so I think this thread can benefit others.

This behavior means that the scanner itself can not recognize it's transparency unit (the lamp in the lid).

First check the cable connecting the lid to the chassis.
In case it is detachable switch off your scanner and unplug that cable (connecting lid to chassis).
Just plug it back in and restart the scanner.

The second possible error lies in the internal calibration.
The scanner requires the first 2-3cm of the scan plane (viewed from the hinges) to calibrate itself.
Make sure no material is placed there.
If the internal scanner calibration fails itwill cause an error and possibly causes the scanner's firmware to crash.
Normally it automatically recovers but sometimes it has to be switched off and on again.
