I have installed USB 2 on my PC and am using my Epson 2450 to scan Medium Format negatives via Photoshop 6 and Silverfast 5.5i. I find no speed improvement over the USB 1 built in to the motherboard and am wondering why this is so. I have an Intel 4 1.7GHz processor and 1GB Ram and Windows XP. Has any one else installed USB2 and found a marked speed improvement when scanning negs or slides - or been disappointed, like me?
I have checked in device manager and USB2 appears to be installed satisfactorily and, when I switch on the scanner, the balloon comes up at the bottom of my screen saying it recognises a USB2 device.
Anyone able to help?

I think it is because your scanner is built for USB 1.0 and the throughput it can handle. It was not designed for USB 2.0, which is required. The only thing I have seen that advertise USB 2.0 is some newer external harddrives. There may be more, but I have yet to see it on the market.

I'm sure someone can shed a little more light on this.

I have checked the specs of 2450. It is built for USB 2. I do not know why you have problems.

lensalem,

I contacted Epson support with same question and the answer I got was that the cable they shipped with scanner is a USB1 (or 1.1), not USB 2.0. After I bought an USB 2.0 certified cable, the only thing that changed was that the scanner became an USB2 device but the speed remains the same.
Another user of the same scanner confirmed that his scanner works as fast (as slow) as mine. Until someone tries with FireWire, I conclude that it is the scanner that sets the speed...
For example, one 35mm frame (longer side of frame parallel to scanner head) takes 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

SilverFast does not work yet with the firewire connection. An upgrade will be available in a few weeks for the Epson Perfection 2450.
