Fuji Velvia optimal scan settings? (vs. Epson Scan)

Postby DanielX » Tue May 25, 2010 1:51 am

Hello,

Can anyone recommend the proper settings to use in order to scan some Fuji Velvia film? I am using an Epson v700 and SilverFast SE.

I use SilverFast SE mostly for negative film, and I am VERY happy with the results. However, this is the 2nd time I have tried to scan slide film, and I'm not having much luck.

With SilverFast, I use the "image auto adjust" button (the one with the diaphragm blades and the 'C' in the middle), in "positive" film mode (although I also tried Kodachrome, just to see).

Here are some comparison scans:

SilverFast SE, image auto adjust:

SilverFast SE, Kodachrome + image auto adjust:

Epson Scan, default settings:

Epson Scan, default + "color restoration":

Thanks!

Dear Daniel,

There is nothing like "ideal" or "proper" settings because it is entirely dependent of every motive (as is clear in this case).

From your pictures I deduce it was shot either at dusk or dawn, perhaps the atmosphere itself was blueish, so you want to correct the picture itself. That is the reason why you use color restauration on EpsonScan.
Image automatic has two toggle buttons which either improve the color correction or increase the contrast.
If you press and hold the Shift key while clicking on Image automatic, it toggles the color correction. You might see (again, depending on the image itself) how the color correction is performed differently.
If you press and hold the control Key while clicking on Image automatic, it will toggle the contrast correction. The picture might have more or less contrast.

You can also press both keys to combine the effects of the different correction.

Please check if any of those combinations help, I also recommend you to check our user manual.

Cheers
