Scanning Times on V750

Postby DaveO » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:51 pm

Hi ,

I recently purchased a V750 to archive many 35mm negatives and have been experimenting with both the Epson scan software and the Silverfast Ai software bundled with the scanner.

I have noticed a big difference in scanning times between the two packages with Silverfast taking considerably longer to scan an negative.

Obvously I have set the resolution the same and I do not have any spec removal configured such as Digial ICE. So essentially both bits of software are working to scan at the same resolution and to produce the same size output file (bit depth and so on).

Can you explain why Silverfast takes so much longer to scan? I am using the negfix dialog to set the film type up. I did read in the manual that when using this feature it does some form of multi-exposure. Could that explain the longer scan time?

Or is it possible I have an obscure setting configured somewhere in Silverfast that is causing some processing I am unaware of?

Dave

Dear Dave,

SilverFast and Epson scan are two different scanning programs which share the same driver. SilverFast uses different algorithms and processes to aquire images.

I am aware that hey are different pieces of software but they are doing the same job and for some reason SilverFast is taking over double the time to acquire images at the same resolution and bit depth. When scanning four film strips in the 35mm film holder each of four negatives (16 in total) the scanning time also gets progressively longer for each photograph which does not appear correct to me.

I am also aware Silverfast has many more options then Epson scan and it is very easy to leave an option selected unintentionally which is what my question was about. Is there anything I may have set that would cause scanning times to be longer? The obvious one would be digital ICE but that isn't the cause so I was wondering if there is anything else I may have inadvertently set that may invoke extra processing over and above that involved for a straightforward scan?

Dear Dave,

You might have turned Multi-Sampling or Multi-Exposure to on which will lead in scanning multiple times.

You might be using a bigger scanning resolution without knowing it, if you change the values of the resolution panel, you might think you are using a specific resolution while in reality might be using a different one. Or this might also lead to the use of interpolation which needs more time because it must scan in optical resolution and then downscale.

You might want to reset the preferences to the factory settings.

This can be done using the service dialogue which can be started by clicking the small button that appears on "SilverFast Universal launcher" to the right of the main starting button by hovering the mouse over it.

OK thanks, I will check these settings out and if that does not work will try the reset.
