IT8 calibration benefits for average user

I am a home user (ie not a professional photographer) and am in the process of scanning my old negatives and print photos into my computer for archival. I currently have an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner and the current version of Silverfast Ai. I can understand that the IT8 calibration targets would be essential for professional photographer's but I am wondering how much benefit they offer for the average user. Most of my prints are relatively new (ie less than 15 years old) and in pretty good condition. Also, if I ever print any of the scanned images the largest I would print would be 8" x 10."
It appears that to upgrade to Ai + IT8 would be about $100. Can anyone comment as to whether it is worth it for my situation?
Also, there is a chance that in about a years time I may be scanning some Kodachrome slides for my parent. Is IT8 calibration for Kodachrome more important?
Sincerely
Stephen Fisher
