IT8 calibration benefits for average user

Postby skfisher » Mon Jun 22, 2009 8:32 pm

I am a home user (ie not a professional photographer) and am in the process of scanning my old negatives and print photos into my computer for archival. I currently have an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner and the current version of Silverfast Ai. I can understand that the IT8 calibration targets would be essential for professional photographer's but I am wondering how much benefit they offer for the average user. Most of my prints are relatively new (ie less than 15 years old) and in pretty good condition. Also, if I ever print any of the scanned images the largest I would print would be 8" x 10."

It appears that to upgrade to Ai + IT8 would be about $100. Can anyone comment as to whether it is worth it for my situation?

Also, there is a chance that in about a years time I may be scanning some Kodachrome slides for my parent. Is IT8 calibration for Kodachrome more important?

Sincerely

Stephen Fisher

Dear Skfisher,

Most scanners come with a calibrated profile which is generic for all scanners of the same model, this does not mean they are bad quality at all. Scanners change their condition with time and use, hence it is advisable to use IT8 calibration to generate new profiles for color fidelity which is very important in professional photography. This is also very important for archival purposes in case of museums and libraries, etc.

You must bear in mind that the price you mentioned for the upgrade does not contain the targets you need to perform the calibration, those have to be purchased separately.

In the case of Kodachromes, this is most likely necessary because Kodachromes are a very special kind of slides which require adedicated color profile, the latest versions of SilverFast come with this profile for many scanners.

Again, it is about color accuracy, IT8 calibration allows you better results in either in normal slides, Kodachromes or relfective art.
