SF 6.6.04c Kodachrome IT8 Cal Probs on 10000XL

Postby Bill Wood » Wed Dec 31, 2008 9:24 pm

Guys

After receiving the new 35 mm Kodachrome IT8 Calibration target and updating to Silverfast 6.6.04c, I thought I would pass on the following obversations.

1. My computer is a Dell 690 Work Station running WinXP Pro. I use Photoshop CS4.

2. The automatic calibration feature is unable to find the IT8 slide if it is in the normal Epson 10000XL 35 mm slide transparency holder. Even if I manually set the frame on the slide. It was necessary to delete the manually set frame, remove the Kodachrome IT8 target from the slide holder and place it directly on the glass. If I manually set a frame on the slide, the automatic calibration would also fail and often lock up communication with the Epson 10000XL, requiring the use of the WinXL Pro Task Manager to close PS and SF.

2. I could not figure out how to do the IT8 calibration in the old manual method. Automatic seems to be the only way to calibrate.

3. Even after a "successful" Kodachrome IT8 calibration, the result needed further color correction to get the scanned Kodachrome IT8 image gray scale steps within a few RGB units. Typically it was necessary to use the Eyedropper White, Gray and Black tools to balance the gray scale steps at the middle (11) and at each end. The uncorrected scan image was so dark I got the "Not bright enough" error message when I first used the white eyedropper. I have attached the resulting images.

Are my observations to be expected when doing an IT8 calibration with the new Kodachrome target?

Dear Mr. Wood,
generally the Kodachrome should behave similar to the "normal" Target.
So i will pass this thread to my colleague handling IT8 Calibration and i am sure he will comment on your problems soon !

best regards,

Dear Mr. Wood,

the manual IT8 calibration should work in any case, for the usual IT8 target and the Kodachrome, too.
The Kodachrome target is somewhat darker that our other targets, and the goal of IT8 calibration
is *not* to transform the gray scale (DMax to DMin) into the range 0..255. This would be a color space
expansion that should be done later on the individual real images that you want to scan.
(If it would be done based on the IT8 target, then we would run the risk to clamp highlights or shadows).

The goal of the IT8 calibration is always to convert the scanned RGB values to such Lab values
that are most near the Lab values read from the reference data file.
For a comparison, one should check the Lab values from an (unchanged) scan of the IT8 target against
the values in the Lab columns of the reference file (in your case E0811017.txt).

Best regards
Martin Münier
