SilverFast v6.4.4r7, Espon 1640XL keeps crashing

On Windows XP...not sure if this is scanner-related or software-related. I deleted the Prefs, & this worked for awhile. The Prescan works fine, but then either freezes or crashes on Scan. Apparently, there are no further updates for this software. tia.

Dear David,

if prescan is okay, but scan sometimes has problems, please make sure to connect the scanner
directly to your computer and with a rather short cable.
