Digital ICE not working

Hello,
I am an extremely inexperienced Silverfast user. I just installed the program yesterday and it took me all day to try and figure out why it was crashing Adobe Photoshop. After reading up, I thought the most recent upgrade would help. I downloaded and installed the most recent upgrade and now ICE does not appear to work. I had no problems with ICE yesterday but I cannot get it to work with the same job I was running yesterday. I receive an error message every time I try to scan, that the selected area or the resolution is too small and ICE cannot be used. I have tried raising the resolution and increasing the selected area. No matter how I play, I cannot seem to get the scan to work unless I turn off ICE. As it worked fine yesterday I am a little worried. Any suggestions? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I obviously have no idea what I am doing.
I am using an Epson Perfection 4990 Photo with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 and the upgrade I downloaded was 6.4.3r8
Thank you!

Scan2Much,
What parameters are you using for your scans? I have the same scanner and have not encountered this problem.
I am using WinXP with AI Studio and SilverFast 6.4.3r8.

Thank you for your reply,
I was originally scanning at 600 dpi, with an output size of about 4x6. I have tried to use Silverfast as a standalone and to use it within Adobe. I am scanning 35 mm slides and have therefore selected each slide within the slide preview. I have then tried scanning at a higher resolution (as high as it will go) and I have tried expanding the selection area to larger then the slide frame. None of these ideas have worked. The ICE still works fine with the Epson software that comes with the scanner. I have still been unable to find a method to use ICE for the slides in Silverfast.
I am also using WinXp with Ai 6
Thanks again for your help, I am so frustrated!

Give the following from the FAQ's a try and see if it doesn't help.
SilverFast on Windows Systems:
-- Windows XP
<> C:\Documents and Settings\[Your logon name]\Application Data\Lasersoft Imaging\SilverFast\Prefs
Please follow your path down to the "Prefs" folder and delete the entire "Prefs" folder.
This will erase all saved SilverFast settings and will set your SilverFast back to the state before the first-time launch.

Thank you very much for your help! I deleted the preferences and rebooted as you suggested. That cleared it up! I am so exstatic that the ICE issue has been resolved!!! Adobe is still crashing, but I am able to use Silverfast as a stand alone. I am up and running thanks to you!
You have been a great resource! Thanks a million!

How much RAM are you allowing Photoshop to use? There was someone else that was experiencing crashes during the scanning process who was able to resolve the problem (Thanks to Helpful Corn's suggestion) by reducing the memory used to 50% or 60%.

For detailed information on the SilverFast Prefs you should contact LaserSoft.
I can only tell you the "Prefs" contain the SilverFast settings and some times one of more of the files becomes corrupted.

I am having a very similar problem but none of the suggestions have helped. I have uninstalled everything twice and tried deleting the prefs folder.
My problem is that using epson scan or v**s**n works fine with DICE for transparencies - when i try to use silverfast it simply hangs right at the beginning of the scan. This was working for months and suddenly just started hanging for no apparanet reason. It is hung to the point that I have to reset the computer to even get out of the application. silverfast does work okay when DICE is disabled.
Any ideas? Help!
thanks

I had been thinking it would not work at all with Silverfast because it is realtivle quick with epson scan and v**s**n. Today I started a small scan about 1 pm and when i came home at 8 pm it had actually worked!!!
Any idea why it would be much slower using Silverfast???

What resolution are you scanning at because I am not experiencing slower performance when using ICE than I was previously? What do you consider a small image?
ICE does a High Res RGB and an infrared scan followed by the final RGB scan, so it takes approximately three times longer than a scan without ICE, but the reduced amount of touch-up work required in Photoshop is worth the wait, right?

As the digital ice function is not working on epson 4990 can anyone shed any light how this will work. When the scanning process is on "Digital ice is being applied" crosses the screen but the moment the picture is opened in photoshop it is very visible this has not worked. Somenone mentioned deleting the prefences - how is this done? I was so impressed with the review I decided to purchase this machine and apart from the ICE factor I am very pleased with the results.
Would be glad of any help, thanks.

Hey,
If you are not already using the latest version you should know that it supports both levels of ICE on the 4990.
If you follow this link you will see that in addition to being able to deal with serial number issues there is a button for deleting the preferences.
Have fun!!!

Sorry to be so thick but I am still having trouble with applying ICE. I click the box, scan pic, but although the scanpilot has the ice screen on, when the image is opened in Photoshop there are flecks still appearing. Epson scan does the same. Where is the function to alter the level - I have not found this. I am beginning to wonder if the machine is at fault.

First of all it is important to note that ICE will not remove everything. You should always use a puff brush to clean pictures before you scan them and make sure to clean the scanner's glass as well.
If there are substantial defects that ICE is not removing you should try changing the angle of the picture (turn it sideways) to see if the angle of refraction improves the quality.
Here is where you change the ICE level in Epson Scan.
