Zoom Tool Malfunctioning; ICE not working in latest update

Hello all,
I've just downloaded and installed the latest release of Silverfast AI for the Epson 4990 (Version: 6.4.2r9). There is a problem with the zoom tool -- when it is set to any magnification level above 1x, it is producing a very dark high resolution prescan. Closing and reopening Silverfast sometimes, but not always, fixes this problem.
The second problem is Digital ICE; it does not appear to be working. If it is, the strength is set very low because I cannot detect any improvement in the images I am scanning.
Please advise. Thank you.

Dear Helpfull Corn
we found the high resolution bug and it will be fixed with the next SilverFast release.
I checked also ICE and it works fine with my images. I tested reflective and transparency - positive / negative.
We have no influence on ICE. We can it only switch on or switch off.
If you have more questions, please don?t hesitate to contact our support.
kind regards
Christoph

Helpful Corn,
I noticed the same thing with the dark images. I found that as a workaround doing a second preview scan works Vs closing and restarting. I ended up changing the setting back to 1x because I'd rather have the image automatically re-scan than having to manually do it each time, so I am glad LaserSoft knows about the problem and I am confident it will be fixed ASAP.

Thank you both for your replies. I'll work on the ICE issue again and report back if I discover anything helpful. RAG, I stumbled upon that workaround as well and I agree with you; setting it back to 1x will have to do for now.
Looking forward to the next release...

I have the same problem here. Same scanner, same Software version, WinXP.
Usually, the ICE button on the preview screen is grayed out here, clicking it brings a popup warning saying something like "ICE can only be used with the narrow transparency unit." I didn?t even know there was one for this scanner.
Hitting the dust removal red cross button adds a button labelled "SRD". I guess this is right, but if I click the ICE button then, it "ungrays" (nice word).
Unfortunately, ICE definitely won?t get activated. There must be something buggy in the software?s dust removal selection.
BTW, I found this when using the 35mm film mask, but I guess this shouldn?t matter... haven?t tried MF mask yet with SE.
Anyone?

Hey,
Which film holder are you guys using? The reason I ask is because the third party holder that comes with anti-newton glass does not work with ICE, so if that is the one you are using ICE will not work period.

Original 35mm. Haven?t tried the MF holder yet, maybe later this day.
BTW ICE works fine with Epson Scan, so there must be a bug in Silverfast SE in the button structure.

Hi, Rag. I wasn't using any film holder at the time; just scanning old photos. Digital Ice works fine with the Epson software, but not at all w/ Silverfast in this latest version... that's the case on my scanner at least. And Bumpi's too, apparently.

Hmm...
I'll give it a try on my scanner some time this week and report my findings.

OK,
I have completed a little test using negatives and found that ICE works both in SilverFast and Epson Scan. One thing I noticed, that I had not expected, was that just by adjusting the image tonality (both applications) the version of the image I scanned with Epson Scan was brighter and the colors were true to life. Yes, this was with the automatic adjustments turned off in both applications. On the other hand the amount of image noise was significantly reduced in the SilverFast version, and that ranks higher for me. I can adjust the tonality post scan without much effort, but removing image noise takes more time.
The bottom line for this thread is that Digital Ice worked in SilverFast.

Thanks for your input, Rag. It's still not working for me though, only works in Epson scan.

Hey,
Did you notice there are two levels of ICE in Epson Scan? I just noticed it this weekend while doing some comparison scans.

Yes, I did! I have no idea when they snuck that in there because I've always used Silverfast for everything... until now, that is.
It would be nice it we had the same choices (or more) in the next update of SF.
