Silverfast AI6 Crashes on Windows 2000

Silverfast often crashes on my Epson Scanner, especially when switching from flat art to transparency mode or the other way. Also, during scans it often crashes if another program uses the processor. It seems no to be very robust at all, and although I have written the company, upgrades seem to have the same problem.

Has anyone experienced this and found a solution or work-around?

Tom

Dear Tom,

which Epson scanner do you use?
Did you already open a ticket via the problem report form:

Ralf,

I was in communication with Jan directly and thought that would be successful, although the issue obviously still exists. There were other issues as well and some of them have been addressed. My scanner is the Epson Expression 1640XL. I'm on Windows 2000 SP4. The real issue I've had all along is the fact that the software is not robust. Whenever the program is interupted by another process on the computer it crashes. You guys could definitely use some more subroutines that anticipate a multi-program environment. The software always crashes when I switch directories to save files, and it always crashes when I switch modes from transparency to flat art or vice versa. There's some sort of buffering problem as well. With very low-res scans it will sometimes operate fine, and the prescan usually does work before the actual scanning procedure again crashes the scanner. I have to reset the scanner and restart the software constantly which is a nightmare. One more thing: When recropping an image in transparency mode, the software automatically performs an autoexposure although that is not what I want when slightly adjusting the crop. This does not happen during flat art scans. In order to restore the profile I need to go through the added steps of using options to change the profile to something else and then back again to get the settings restored. So annoying! Yes, I am using the latest version 6.4.2r2.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Tom

Dear Tom,

if you did already open a ticket via the problem report form: could you please tell me the ticket number?
If not I would really appreciate if you could open a trouble ticket. It helps us to get some necessary information, most often in the form of the SF_Logfile and the SF Statistics.

On a Windows 2000 system the SF_Logfile is placed within /Documents and Settings/(your username)/Application Data/LaserSoft Imaging.
If you haven't yet changed the standard setting of the Windows Explorer you won't see any folder "Application Data". You then want to open the folder options dialogue (from the "Extras" menu) and go to the "View" tab. There you can enable the Explorer to show you hidden and system files and folders as well as displaying the contents of system folders.

You could of course also use the search function of your system to find the "SF_Logfile". Please make sure that you will be shown hidden and system files. The SF_Logfile is always created anew when SilverFast is started up; even if no scanner can be found, it will be created.

The other file called "SF Statistics" lists the details of the scan settings which may be problematic on your machine.
You can generate it from the "Expert Dialogue" (button on the horizontal panel in the settings window) -> button "Output Statistics".
Some more information is given at http://www.silverfast.com/faq/1058/en.html

Thanks in advance for your co-operation.

Best regards
Ralf

I have the files you are requesting. Don't think I have a ticket number. Could you make my life easy and just assign one? This is so much trouble as it is. I really just want this software to work right without too many more hoops. I would be happy to respond to your email and send the files if you will provide a direct email address.

Thanks,

Tom
