Hello, is it possible to scan in 48 bit mode with Silverfast 6.1 SE? I am using it with the Epson 3200. Or do I need to upgrade to another version? Thanks.

when do you plan to have a 48bit silverfast SE ? It seems to be a terrible waste of the epson 4870 dynamic range if the software that comes with it is not able to handle it.

There is no plan to support 48-bit in SE versions. This is one of the differences between SE and Ai.

However, please note that SE and Ai versions do send the same gradation tables to the scanner. This means that gradation and gamma are applied in the scanners firmware at maximum bit depth.

Then I guess i dont understand why would Epson OEM the Silverfast SE software with their 4870 scanner, capable of doing 3.8DMAX, when they know that 'that' software product would never ever live up to the hardwares capabilities.

As I mentioned, the SE version uses 16-bit gradation curves, which are downloaded to the scanner and which converts the scanners raw data into 8-bit. Using the full bit depth means that the entire dynamic range of the scanner is used before convertion to 8-bit data.

There is of cource a difference in the price for SE and Ai. If Epson would have bundled the Ai version, the price for the scanner would have increased.

Of course, SE users can upgrade to Ai, if more power is needed. Please try the free demo.

Your answer is no more palatable that someone suggesting that your 48bit data will be reduced to CGA values.
I dont want to upgrade merely to get a TWAIN driver capable of producing 48bit files.
Since I am not yet a user of SE, where can i go to get a refund? I'll be more than happy to re-evaluate your product once you have the capability to produce 48bit files.
BTW I'm sure your marketing/sales dept had something to do with the 'bundling' of this software, as well as epson's marketing/sales dept. Did your marketing dept really try to stop epson from selling your software, when you knew that it would never be fully compatable?

I stated earlier, that there is no plan to support 16-bit in SE versions. That was a terrible mistake . 16-bit output will be available in version 621r6.

Of course our marketing/sales dept was invloved in the bundling with Epson, but please understand that we can?t give away our full version for the same low price as the SE version.

why does Epson write on the box of the new 4870 photo scanner that it scans in 48 bit - when there is no 48 bit technology to gain.

I feel misled - and i just sold my Canon 9900F which was a great scanner compared to this....

Marketing-bullshit i say...... Sorry to be so frank, but i really feel that i bought something that I was looking forward to be using - as a photographer i WANT the 16 bit per channel - all in all 48 bit.

And i?m stuck with 8 bit per channel ....... that sucks....

it seems that you people should be complaining to the scanner manufacturers. they are the ones who chose to bundle SE instead of Ai. it wasn't Lasersoft's decision.

if you want dirt cheap solutions, you might try v**s**n.

personally, I much prefer SilverFast, even though I had to *buy* 3 different versions; Microtek, Nikon and HDR.

Dear BlueLemon,

starting with version 621r8 (which will be available for download in one or two days) the SE version of SilverFast DOES support output of 16 bit per channel (we call it HDR output).
