LaserSoft Imaging

I'm getting a strange effect when I scan 35mm transparencies in that areas of shadow detail come out looking soft-focus or blurred, almost as if that part of the tranny wasn't in focus when the pic was taken (but it was, I've checked). Mid-tone and highlight areas are OK and the effect doesn't seem to occur when scanning from colour negs. I've tried taking the trannies out of their frames and putting them into the negative strip holder but it doesn't make any difference.

Any ideas? Is the scanner faulty?

I too am experiencing the same problem in the shadow areas with transparency scans. I recently scanned a trannie on my Minolta Dimage Scan Dual, which has a DMAX of 3.2 and then scanned the same trannie using my Epson 3200 (which claims to have a DMAX of 3.4 !)

The results were, on the Epson 3200 ,less than impressive in the shadow areas, where the image looked out of focus ! but in the mid-tones and highlights it produced a better scan, which gave smoother gradations.

The Minolta scan was much sharper in the shadow areas, but both scanners had captured the same detail !

It can't be anything to do with the Silverfast software because, I got the same result using the Epson Scan software in professional mode.

I would appreciate comments though !

This behaviour turned out to be a fault in the Epson drivers (also used by SilverFast). It occurs as soon as ICC color profiles are used in SilverFast (or Epson) software.

So what would be the correct way to disable the ICC-profiles? I am a little confused about that.. Should I just disable Colour Management in SilverFast?

I have also noted this problem, but epson has not responded to my question and all lasersoft has said is its not there fault. No one here has offered a workaround other than turn off icc profile. So far no one at lasersoft has said they are working with epson to resolve this problem. Am I expecting too much from a bundled pkg that the bugs should be worked out between the mfgs & software mfg in a timely way. This is not ment to be a flame , but an ernest desire to open better communications. There may indeed be an impass that cannot solved. Hope not Thanks wyndham@ac.net

I am still having problems with shadow areas being very soft (out of focus) on all my transparency scans. I have turned off ICC profiles in Silverfast Ai6 but the scans are no different. I am tearing my hair out now because I have approx 200 medium format transparencies to scan quickly....all with detail in the shadow areas....aaaaagggghhhhhh
