Epson Perfection 3200, SilverFast SE, and OS X 10.2.3

Just set up my new scanner yesterday. Had some strange things with Silver Fast SE 6, it would take two goes at Import under Photoshop 7 to find the scanner. Thinking that a newer version might be available I downloaded the update today from the LSI site.
The newer version finds the scanner first time, but jams either when trying to prescan for USM or for the scan itself. I have to force quit Photoshop and even on one occasion hard-restart the Mac (almost ungheard-of in OS X..). The scanner makes a few noises, its warm-up/activity light flashes for a bit then goes steady and the application hangs. Same thing happens in SilverFast SE stand-alone.
I've tried reinstalling the original SilverFast verison from my CD but it doesn't seem to fix it.
I have OS 10.2.3, USB connection, Photoshop 7.
All help appreciated.
Thanks
