USM in SF 6.01r17 Ai for Epson 2450

When I started scanning with my new Epson 2450 and the Epson twain driver six months ago, I remember being able to see the results of USM immediately in the before- and after-windows.
Now, with SF 6.01r17 (twain) and Photoshop Elements I click on the "Schaerfung (USM)" field, the pop-up window appears with its preset "3 x 3 pixels", I click on the "Prescan button there - and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
By the way, I had a lot of crashes lately with SF 6.01 and Photoshop Elements (1). Newly installing SF only helped for a while; after that a new installation of Photoshop Elements apparently did the trick.

SilverFast USM TWAIN with Photoshop Elements
We will check this problem. But for Photoshop Elements installing the SilverFast Photoshop Plug-in makes much more sense, since the Photoshop plug-in is communicating directly 2-ways between SilverFast and Elements, resulting in better colour consistency!

Thank you, President,
I will try the plug-in. I faintly remember having some problem with the plug-in and PE when I tried it first, so I stuck to Twain.

Dear Mike -
Just I tried to find your bug with the Perfection 2450 on WIN Millenium - USB and FireWire with Photoshop Elements 1 and SilverFast 6.0.1r17 and our newest version 6.0.1r36. However I didn?t find the bug you descibed. Indeed - the scanner needs a little bit time to warm up until it is ready to start the prescan. So what is the differance ?? Which computer system do you use?
with regards
Christoph

Dear Christoph,
I have had some private correspondence with your colleague Thomas in between - the problem was that the scanner needs a pretty long time to warm up before the prescan as you say quite rightly. In my case it was more than 30 seconds, and as I had been used to the immediate response of the Epson Twain I simply gave up before.
I am using an Abit Mobo with Pentium III/933, 256 MB, Win98 and three pretty fast Maxtor HDs, but it is the Epson scanner that seems to be to blame here.
By the way, your SF plug-in (r17)does not work with Photoshop Elements 1, only the twain driver does. At least I could not find SF among the plug-in modules, but - okay - I am a beginner in scanning and imaging.
Cheers,

Dear Mike -
Just I checked it:
Epson 2450 - Win ME - USB and firewire - Photoshop Elements 1 with SilverFast 6.0.1r17 and r36 - only the Photoshop plug-in.
I didn?t find a bug. Everything worked well. The prescan needs 15 seconds and the presan in "Sch?rfung " needs 17 seconds. I checked reflective and transparency. The plug-in has to be installed in : Programme/Adobe/Photoshop Elements/Plug-ins/ Import-Export folder. There might be some problems in the case you have installed Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. So I am asking myself, what is wrong. I will get a clean Win 98 system and try it there. Do you use an USB or firewire connection?
With regards
Christoph

Dear Christoph,
You need not search any more - your efforts have lead in the right direction. While the SF plug-in was present in the PS 6 import/export directory, the PS Elements directory only contained the twain driver. Apparently your installation procedure favours the more senior programme. Copying the SF plug-in to the PS Elements directory brought a total improvement, the USM prescan is now much faster, 15 seconds or less. -- I am using the USM connection.
With many thanks,
--Mike
