Hello,
I am trying to scan Kodak Portra 8x10 films with my Epson V700. I am using the software Silverfast Ai 6.6.
Here are the problems I have:
- I need to activate the Full transparency option in order to be able to scan the whole surface necesary for the 8x10 film. In this case the second scanner lens is activated and the max sharpness will be on the scanner's glass?
- if yes, do I have to put me negative directelly on the glass in order to get maximum sharpness? In this situation there is a big chance to have the Anti-Newton rings... How can we solve this problem?

Dear Matei,

The EPSON V700 uses a fix focus lens system.
When set to full area transparency the focus is set to the surface of the glass plane.
This can not be changed.
So in this mode the film must be placed directly on the glass.

There are several third-party solutions to the newton ring issue.
Like special glass or wet-mounting kits.
SilverFast unfortunately can not effect this because it is a hardware effect.

Yes, I know that I can use the fluid scanning option with an Anti-Newton Glass but I cannot wetmount directely on the scanner's glass.
The sollution I found for scanning 8x10 films is to dry or wetmount scan on an Anti-Newton Glass placed at 1-1.5mm above the scanner's glass on Full transparency option.
The loss of sharpness is almost invisible at 100% visualisation of the image scan in Adobe Photoshop.

Dear Matei,

If the glass is only 1-1,5 mm thick the film should still be inside the focal range.

wet mounting directly on the glass is possible but requires a special conversion kit to make the surface fully water-prove.
