When scanning slides on the SS4000 I am getting some awfully dark results which need lots of work with histograms on both the scanning software and in Photoshop. Anything I may have overlooked when setting up my preferences?

A number of possibilities:

1. You are trying to output the images as 48bit HDR (see 2 below)

2. the gamma gradation level is set too low - keep it at around 2 to 2.2 and make sure "for HDR output" is checked .

3. In Default Preferences>Special tab you have Limit Gamma Slope chhecked - uncheck it.
