Hi, I briefly read some of the posts regarding IT8 targets. It looks like C-Roes is not recommended anymore, but, that's what I have.

I had to re-install 5.5.2 r11. I've always found the scans to be somewhat dark, but are certainly dark now. As a result I tried to recalibrate, and realized I no longer have the IT8 reference file.

I have a C-Roes target, IT8.7/1-1993 1999:10 T2X C-ROES. I downloaded TK199910C2.txt as it appeared to be the only match. But, when I go into the calibration routine, I can't open the file. It shows up, but is greyed out. I've tried changing the .txt to other .xxx types, and still can't access the file.

Can anyone tell me why this, and how to fix it?

looks to me like you've downloaded the correct file.
The extension shouldn't matter.
What I suspect is that the file was opened and saved again, thereby the line feed breaks have become assigned another ASCII value. This might render the file unusable for the sake of SilverFast IT8 calibration routine while not being noticable in a text editor.

Please try to download again without viewing the file in a text editor.

Well, I did view the first attempt at downloading, but I never resaved it. I've also downloaded it multiple times without viewing it, or opening it. I retried this morning, and it's still greyed out in silverfast.

Could the problem be in the on-line file?

I had a look at it. Could calibrate on Win XP and Mac OSX with the ref file with SilverFast 6 for NikonMAID scanners, not having a 5.5 ready at my hands and knowing more about your OS and scanner.

However, it still shows the ref file's in working condition.

Finally I found - after some internal research - that there's actually a reason for this:
SilverFast 5.5 "detects" reference files differently. But some ressource information was lost in an transfer between Mac and Windows worlds and so for SilverFast 5.5 indeed the TK199910C2.txt does not appear to be a valid IT8 target reference.

Who will have to trick SilverFast 5.5 in accepting the file:
(1) Look which other file is acceptable (not greyed out).
(2) Copy-paste the contents from TK199910C2.txt to that file and save it.
(3) Run the calibration again.

Please note also:
The target is already five years old and hadn't been prime quality from the start. I doubt you'd get acceptable results with it.
You might want to acquire a new one...

Well, I've tried to download about 10 others, and haven't gotten any to show as readable.

and, yes, I never was really happy with the C-ROES, even from the start, but I didn't feel that I should have to "buy" a new target because an inferior one was included with my scanner. I've usually adjusted the scans once saved.

As for now, I've manually adjusted my scans with a saved gradation curve. I guess that will have to do.

if your monitor is calibrated and your eyesight great, you should be fine.
As long as you haven't to deliver "exact" colours (as for fashion and catalogue work) you are usually not bad of going along that way.
