LaserSoft Imaging

Bought a Sprintscan 120 a few weeks ago. Boy does it make great scans when it works. I've been having all kinds of problems between the scanner and my CD burner both of which are SCUSI. The burner is built in and on channel 3. I have switched the polaroid to all other avalable channels but the computer could not find the CD unit unless I disconected the scanner. The termination switch is set corectly.

Anyway, I was living with that OK cause I don't need the burner everyday. Last night every thing crashed in the middle of a scan and now the device manager can't find any SCUSI. Once I get that fixed I don't want to deal with it anymore and would like to try a Firewire but don't know anything about it, could one of you fine folks fill me in?

Seems as if you SCSI bus configuration is messed up. I believe you work on a Windows machine, well here are some quick hints for Windows SCSI:
If that Windows computer has a CDwriter installed, unplug this device from the computers main board. If SilverFast then finds the scanner with out problems, there are various permanent possible remedies:
- some main boards (above all those with Via chip sets) need driver updates for their chipset.
- machines with more than one hard disk may accept a swapping of Master /Slave configuration of the installed physical drives.
- some CDwriters may require a firmware update.

...another thing you could try:

Some UDF- drivers cause all kind of problems. Please check if you're using "DirectCD" or a similar variant. As a test, you could remove al CD- burning aplications to see if the scanner is then found by the software (please test both Polacolor Insight and SilverFast). Moving to FireWire might be a work-around. You should get a OHCI- compliant FireWire card. Please be aware that scanning on the FireWire bus is only supported in Windows ME , 2k or XP. (Win 98 does not support this feature!)

What is "OHCI-compliant", and in what does that differ from, say, regular, Firewire cards?

I have tried to scan from my Win2k server via Firewire, but could only get relatively small amounts of data thru. A 35-mm-slide scan infull resolution would freeze somewhere in the first third of the process.

From a laptop with WinXP and an built-in Firewire adapter, the scans went thru with no problem.
