Sprintscan 4000 gives black scan

My sprintscan 4000 does a preview OK and scans at 1000 dpi OK, but at 2000 and 4000 dpi, the scans are completely black.
Any ideas?

Update with more info:
v**s**n 7.6.46 works fine.
Polacolor Insight 5.5 gives error on preview, "Unknown ASPI error, ...,aspi=69H"
Aspichk gives: aspi32.sys version 4.71.2, wowpost.exe 4.6 (1021), winaspi.dll 1.0.6, winaspi32.dll. 4.71.2.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Problem solved
I had set the /PAE swith in my boot.ini file in a misquided effort to access more memory.
When I turned the switch off, the scanner started working.
