I have a Polaroid SS120. What is the correct proceedure for powering up?

Is it:

1. Power up scanner, power up computer

2. Power up computer, power up scanner

It is a firewire connection to G4 running MacOS 10.3.2 and is eventually used via PhotoshopCS.

your firewire scanner - and this holds true for USB scanners, too - should be "plug-and-play" compatible.

Simply turn it on when you want to use it. After the scanner initialization phase it will signal the computer that it is there and ready.
Concerning firewire and USB device modern operating system have been developed to detect them when being connected to the computer, even after the system has booted into ready state.

However, the procedure might be different for some type of devices, especially SCSI scanners.
With these you will turn on the scanner first.
Then you need to wait until the scanner has initialised and is ready for communication.
Now is the point for turning on the computer. It will detect its hardware, e.g. the SCSI controller, which will run its own booting sequence, detecting the scanner.
Then the operating system starts up, knowing of all devices that have been attached prior to the OS booting procedure.
