IT8 Calibration problems

Even though I've calibrated my scanner using the IT8 calibration process the colours are still not right and need a lot of correction in Photoshop. Today I spent several hours going over and over the process trying to see if I'd missed anything but to no avail. The results were consistent each time ...but consistently wrong!

Can anyone suggest what I could try next? Should I try buying a different target transparency? Are there known problems with this process?

Thanks,

Bob.

IT8 Calibration problems

Please read the tutorials from Ian Lyons. Make sure your color working space in SilverFast (Internal) is the same in Photoshop.

Many thanks for your reply. I tried following Ian Lyons tutorials as you suggested but there was no difference.

In fact it's the prescan image that shows inaccurate colours. When I prescan the IT8 target transparency and place the densitometer over the pure red, green and blue patches I get the following readings:

RED Patch - R 230 G 0 B 4
GREEN Patch - R 60 G 176 B 35
BLUE Patch - R 0 G 3 B 184

This doesn't look right to me - surely the GREEN Patch should not have such significant red and blue components? I'm not sure what this is teling me though or where the error might be. By the way I have calibrated my monitor using Adobe gamma.

The 35mm IT8 target tranny I'm using is labelled IT8.7/1-1993, 1999-10, T2X C-ROES and I'm using the calibration file TK199910C2.txt

Hope you can help me further as this is driving me nuts!

Many thanks,

Bob.

C-Roes is old IT8-target

C-Roes is an old IT8-target

The C-Roes IT8-target is an old IT8-target and is not recommended any more. It is outdated and we have seen it has strong colour deviations. You should order a brand-new target with small delta-E from us or others!

Ah... thank you! I did suspect the target. I will buy a new one - but how do I choose which one to buy? - there are so many listed on the Silverfast site. What's the difference? Is there one you would recommend?

IT8 35 mm target

IT8 35 mm target

If you are working with a 35 mm film scanner that is your target:

Transmissive IT 8.7/1 (35 mm) on Kodak Ektachrome Professional

For flatbed scanners the following targets:

Reflective IT 8.7/2 (5x7" layout) on Fuji Professional Paper
Transmissive IT 8.7/1 (4x5" layout) on Kodak Ektachrome Professional

are advised!

Sorry I was getting confused with the reference files! I see there are only two 35mm targets to choose from - one Kodak and one Fuji.

I wonder why the Fuji target is twice the price of the Kodak one? I do use Fuji transparency film all the time. Can I calibrate my scanner as effectively with the cheaper Kodak target or do I really need the Fuji one?

Kodak or Fuji IT8-Targets?

Kodak or Fuji IT8-Targets?

Kodak film is the standard target which is sufficient for most situations. However if photographers shoot a loot of Fuji film, they prefer to have the IT8-calibration done with a Fuji film targets correspondingly.

The Fuji film target is much more expensive since the film is hard to get and the process needs more tweaking. Despite this our Fuji film target prices are very competitive, some other vendors charge as much as 500$.

I am having the same problem as Bob with the same target. I predominantly shoot Fuji ProviaF and Velvia. It makes sense to me to calibrate the scanner with the same target as the film you shoot. On the other hand, a $100 target is pretty spendy! Do you have separate targets for Provia and Velvia? My Fuji film costs the same as the new Kodak Ektachromes. Are you using a special type of film?

Can anyone enter the discussion that has experience scanning Fuji Velvia or Provia using the less expensive Kodak target? Is it better to just turn off the IT8 calibration feature. So far it makes things worse than with no calibration. I was hoping to gain some color fidelity accuracy over the Polacolor Insight scanning scanning software using SF Ai6/IT8! Thanks for your comments.
