unreadable .tif files unless saved via iPhoto

I'm running the Ai Suite 6.6.2r4a on the latest Snow Leopard.
My workflow is to scan a slide or negative and save it as 64bit HDRi. Then I open the HDRi, process it and save it as 48bit color (or 16bit B+W) .tif file. The type of processing I do seems irrelevant, but is usually just color correction, application of GANE, and maybe a little cropping.
In either case, I can view the result in Preview and can import it into iPhoto. However, I cannot share the photo with non-Mac systems, whether by Share-ing from the iPhoto menu or by simply transferring the .tif file. What the non-Mac recipient sees is a banded, repeated fragment of the image's R, G and B channels.
If I do *anything* to the .tif file in iPhoto and re-save it, the resulting file is usable on Windows boxes.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is iPhoto limiting the color to 8 bits/channel and making the file compatible with non-Macs? Is there a fix that doesn't require me to import into iPhoto and re-save?
