Silverfast Ai (Nikon LS4000) freezes on each startup!

Hi!
I've got a serious problem with my Silverfast Ai Installation. It simply freezes, claiming 100% of my CPU on every startup after the startup screen appears. I always have to force it to close with the Windows task manager. The program doesn't seem to find my Nikon LS 4000 although my Windows XP SP2 seems to have correctly installed my firewire Scanner. Do you have more than one scanner connected to your computer? I used to have that problem when I had two scanners connected (an all-in-one HP and my Epson). What I had to do as a work around was to turn off the HP prior to starting SilverFast, but I eventually un-installed the HP all-in-one and just installed the print driver for it so that my computer only recognized one scanner.
Is short I think it might be a conflict with your:

Well, unfortunately your suggestion didn't help

After I had disconnected the Canon USB Lide50 Scanner, deleted all registry-values refering to him and deinstalled the driver on each USB port, silverfast still won't start. Although Windows seems to have properly installed the provided Firewire PCI card and the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED driver!

The problem also occurs when I disconnect or even uninstall the scanner AND it even occurs with the NikonScan 3.1 software.
I HAVE deinstalled the Silverfast software and the drivers as suggested in the FAQ several times and it still did not work :-C
Should I reinstall Windows?

I don't know if this would cause a problem or not, but when you install SilverFast and get to the last screen there is a check box for installing SCSI drivers. Did you uncheck this box? It is checked by default.

That didn't resolve the problem

I now even reinstalled Windows (as update). if there won't be a solution soon, I'll try to clean C: and make a blank installation...

I was going to ask if SilverFast worked with your Canon scanner, but remembered it is scanner specific. This would have helped to further isolate the problem.

Dear Manuel,
do you have a "LS4000.md3" file inside your system32 folder? This file is needed to drive the scanner and should be there after a successful SilverFast installation.
Another thing: If NikonScan is not working, it's unlikely, that SilverFast will work, as we are using the same library to drive the scanner. Did you try NikonScan 4.0 (can be downloaded from the
Nikon US site)?

I found the file in my system32 folder, it still does not work. I think clean my system seems to be the only option now. it cannot be a hardware problem, because the scanner worked pretty fine last week under os x tiger (macintosh)...

Works with Nikon Scan 4.0

To my great relief the solution was to copy the ASPI drivers (WNASPI.DLL, WNASPI32.DLL and ASPI32.SYS) to be found in "/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/" resp. "/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/" into the main program directory of silverfast! I found the solution in another thread, in the scanner specific support forum:
