I believe the problem with Win XP and Silverfast to be caused, not by silverfast itself, but by lack of XP compatible device drivers.

You should have Win XP certified device drivers for your make of scanner before you attempt to make SilverFast work with it. Otherwise you're asking for trouble.

Does anyone know if or when Nikon will release Win XP device drivers for LS4000?

I have a Powerlook 3000,which causes XP to reboot, when I start Silverfast. But I thought, the device driver would be included in Silverfast. The only thing I have from UMAX is the scanning-software "Magicscan".Does this mean, that I have to install Magicscan before I can get SF to work? There is no device driver from UMAX for the Powerlook, just the scanning software.

Dear both,
SilverFast for non-SCSI scanners needs device drivers that are supplied by the manufacturer's scan software. Therefore, that "original software" must be installed alongside.
If a Windows system does not recognise your scanner, because of missing *.inf files (for that device) these *.inf files can usually be found on the manufacturer's Software CD. Let Windows browse the CD for drivers.
This is a rather general information. As far as Windows XP is concerned I have seen a statement on the Umax website that XP is currently not supported
go to https://www.silverfast.com/support/nikon ... all-en.htm
and type "Windows XP" in the search box.
I believe it is not much different with Nikon.

And what about SCSI scanners like my Powerlook 3000.Do I also have to install anything from the original scanning-software?

Nikons XP statement:
(http://www.nikontechusa.com/XP.htm):

Nikon plans full support under Windows XP for the following products:

Coolscan III (LS-30)
Coolscan IV ED (LS-40)
Super Coolscan (LS-2000)
Super Coolscan 4000 ED (LS-4000)
Super Coolscan 8000 ED (LS-8000)

Nikon has confirmed that the current version of NikonScan 3 software (Version 3.1 or older) does not support Windows XP. We will update the availability of the upgraded software by the end of November 2001. We are currently planning to distribute updated software at no charge via download from the Internet.

I have an Epson Expression 636 and a Silverfast CD with ver 3.x on it. My old computer has Silverfast updated to
4.2.7. I've copied those files over to my new Windows XP system. It all opens and works correctly except I can only get in in Demo Mode. It comes up with my registration number and asks me to put in my CD. When I put in my old CD it doesn't recognize it. I don't have a new CD since I paid for and downloaded the update online. I'd like to get help from LaserSoft (ie: a code) so that I can download the update I've paid for in the past or some other way to activate my current version installed. I'd like to be able to use my Silverfast w/o being in Demo Mode since that inprints a watermark on scans. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

BTW...their email response to me was that they haven't tested the software with XP and I'll have to wait and pay for the new version. I paid for this version and it is clearly working with XP. I just need to get my authorization codes. thanks again.

Nikon on there service website indicates they are coming out with XP for 4000 in November, if it is a "good" as the old version who needs it! I loaded the Hamrick v**s**n (Hamrick.com) software which allowed me to use the 40000 on my XP Sony Vaio RX 580. I was then able to load the Silverfast 5.5 software and it works fine. This seems to have solved loading the 4000 on an XP. The v**s**n (Free or $40 for support) is a GREAT product, it also allowed me to get my Epson 1600 Expression drivers to work with XP! The Hamrick software works as a TWAIN and not a plug-in. They also have a program called Vueprint which is also free and great.
