LaserSoft Imaging

I am using silverfast 5 with photoshop 6, using a polaroid scanner (connected by scsi) with Mac OS9.2.2. This is on a quicksilver g4 and it has worked fine 2 years. We are real silverfast fans.

I recently added a firewire umax flatbed scanner with vistascan software. All of a sudden, I am unable to scan using the polaroid from within Silverfast. I get an error "Not enough memory for Prescan". I have now deleted the vistascan software and disconnected the flatbed scanner and I still get the error and am completely unable to run SilverFast.

I was looking for Twain Select but don't see it there.. does anyone knoww what I can do to fix this problem???

as you probably know under Mac OS 9 you have to explicitely tell the system how much maximum memory an app may use.
Please check this for SilverFast and/or Photoshop (using the "info" command from the Finder's "File" menu).

Currently, photoshop is allocated over 500Mb of Ram, and there is plenty of memory on the machine (1Gb). I see no way to allocate more ram to silverfast, but find it hard to believe that that is the real cause of the problem here...

actually if 500 Megs are sufficient or not depends on scan settings. It is not very difficult to have greater temporary file sizes.

Please note that allocating RAM to Photoshop only works for SilverFast if started via Photoshop; when using the SF_Launcher, you want to allocate RAM to the SF_Launcher too.

Also, why not give PS more RAM?
However, it is also important that the hard disk which is used by photoshop and SilverFast as a scratch disk has enough free space left.

And now for something completely different:
SilverFast does generate this error something with a multi-monitor setting.
Please make sure to open SilverFast on the first monitor. Sometimes it even cannot be used at all with Mac OS 9 in a multi-monitor environment.

I have upped photoshops memory to 750Mb, and still get not enough memory errors, even if I try to scan at 72dpi. I have reinstalled silverfast, but still no avail. It all worked perfect before I added the Umax scanner, but now it won't work to save my soul. I am at my wits end. Any ideas where to go next?

delete photoshop and reinstall everything?

after consulting an experienced colleague I found I did forget to ask you about multi-monitor use.
This phenomenon you experience can be caused when using more than just one monitor at once. In such a case, please shut down your system, disconnect all monitors but one, restart and check if the problem is resolved.

I just deleted and reinstalled Silverfast and removed the Umax scanner plugins from Photoshop and am still getting out of memory errors with silverfast. I'm really needing to scan with the polaroid scanner but am unable... Any advice at all???

what about free space on hard disk (one free gig should help).

there are 6.5 Gb free on a 40Gb drive. Shouldn't that be sufficient?

what if it's something that the Umax scanner installed in the system?

try this:

1. open Extensions Manager and switch to the OS 9 Basic set.
2. reboot.

3. reinstall SilverFast.
4. reboot (assuming that it installs Twain stuff, etc).

5. turn on your scanner.
6. launch Photoshop.

I am happy to report that my problem has at long last been resolved. I believe that the installer for the the UMAX firewire scanner installed scsi drivers as well, which were screwing up the polaroid scanner scsi drivers.

Ugh, I hate OS9! OSX is so much better! Thanks all to everyone who helped on this!
