Hi,

I am very new to Silverfast, so please kindly excuse my newbie question. I have been using the Nikonscan all the while and decided to try out SF.

When I do a prescan of my Kodak Elitechrome slides, I get a red tinted under-exposed preview for all the slides. The tint is removed and the exposure corrected if I choose CCR, however, I am curious why is it that in the first place. I would expect something quite close to my original slides. I am using a Nikon Coolscan 8000ED.

If I want a "raw" scan of the image, is the 48Bit HDR the way to go?

It is a common misconception, that there is an "original" image.
In fact the image always is a combination of the lightsource, the film and the sensor seeing it.
So a scanner with it's bright, white light and CCD will see a different picture than a projector and the human eye will see.
Tools like the CCR are specially mad so these differences can be adjusted to.

It is possible the high dynamic range sensor of the scanner will see much more colors.
This might enable it to see color casts otherwise not noticeable.

This is why there are several ways in SilverFast to correct color casts.
(Auto CCR, Neutral Pipette, Histogram)

There are some additional points of importance.
Make sure the red scan-frame is set exactly around the image content.
If unexposed material or a slide frame is inside the scan-frame this can disturb the histogram and therefore the auto adjustment.

You might want to calibrate your scanner once you have your full version of SilverFast.
A dedicated device profile can compensate a colorcast originating in the device itself.
