Nikon 9000ED no previews and ADF problems

Postby peterschall » Sat Aug 04, 2012 5:42 pm

I am using 8.0.1r14, 2012-07-26 on a Win 7 x64 PC to scan 6x6 slide and negative film as well as Kodachrome slides.

When I open the preview window and click on refresh nothing happens. At least under Mac OS this seems to be a known bug. Is this true for windows, too and is there a solution to the problem.

Clear skies
Peter

Dear Peter,

This issue is currently present on all operating systems.

It will be fixed with our upcoming update.

Or you can download this testing version if you need a quick solution.
But this has not been fully tested yet.

kind regards,
Arne ketelhohn.

Is there a testing version for Mac OS X 10.8?

Thank you!

I recently upgraded to SF8. The documentation is awful/non-existent and there is obviously a learning curve. The third party book by Segal is not well written and a jumbled mess. There is not a table of contents let alone an index. At least the prior version had a decent user guide. I can find no way to preview more than the first frame on a strip of 4 6x4.5 using the nikon holder. It is not intuitive at all. When I try to pre scan the whole strip it only previews the first frame. I have been very disappointed with the software. I had no such problems with Nikon scan or v**s**n or the prior version of SF for that matter. Anybody know how to preview the entire strip?? Thanks

Dear customer,

a preview of all frames in the holder is available through the overview tool.
It is located among the icons to the left of the preview area.
In case not all icons can be shown a downwards double arrow is visible.
Clicking it will expand the Icon bar.

kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

An overview yes. But there does not seem to be a way to preview each of the frames on the main screen and make adjustments to each individual image on a strip of 4 frames for instance. I believe that was possible with version 6.4-6.6. It was possible with Nikon Scan and it is possible with v**s**n. If I want to scan one image at a time, I have a Hasselblad/Imacon Scanner for that. I use the Nikon for scanning multiple images at a time (as separate files) and was the main reason I upgraded to Silverfast. Is it not possible to do this? There would be no need to ask this question if there was a user guide for the software? I reiterate here what I asked in another thread. Shouldn't a very expensive, complex piece of software have documentation? And please do not refer me to the third party manual by Segal. That book is not very well written. There is no table of contents, no index, and written in very poor english. In a word, it is difficult to find anything in that book. I am sorry I purchased it. Silverfast Version 6 had an excellent user guide and there was another third party book that was available that was very good. I do not remember who the author was, but it was not Segal. Anyway, is there any way to accomplish previewing, adjusting, and scanning as separate files each frame in a strip of 3 or 4 with the Nikon LS-9000 and the stock 120 holder?? Thank you in advance.

Dear customer,

currently it is only possible to use the ADF scan for automatic processing of images.
But our developers are working on the JobManager to extend it to these devices.
This will be available through a free update in the near future.

It is one year since I "upgrade" from Silverfast 6.6 to SIlverfast 8. FORTUNATELY I did not deinstall SIlverfast 6.6 AND I have left the operating system at Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6). The Silverfast 8 ADF job manager and the Silverfast 8 documentation are no where near as complete and usable as Silverfast 6.6. I do not know what I will do if it is necessary to reinstall Silverfast 6 because the serial number was disabled after 8.x was purchased.

I am sure that Silverfast 6.x was not perfect either when it was first released. We can hope that Silverfast 8.6 will be equal to Silverfast 6.6

Until that time I am leaving the Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.x

I Uuse r16 of SF 8 and a Nikon 9000 and also observe the ADF issue mentioned above.

One workaround for using the ADF is to scan raw = 48b HDR or (raw + IR files) = 64b files on your disk and use (provided you have a license) HDR SF6.x version to treat those files.
There, batch treatment works in a snap, and every file can have individual settings.

Using SF8 HDR is still a hassle, since often it cannot even read in the files that SF8 generated with the scanner (crashed with 16 or 32 BW files ) or the preview of the requires a cumbersome combination of keyboard strokes.

Kind regards, Philippe

Hello Everybody, something more about the workaround mentioned above: the concept of having archive files (3 x 16 bits RGB + IR) called 64hdr files in the SF nomenclature is appealing to many of us confronted with ARCHIVING material in the best possible quality. The same with 48hdr files (funny name !) that are supposed to be some sort of raw format. SF6 scanner SW + SF6 HDR studio offer the possibility of a nice workflow, and having "raw" files in mind, it would be HIGHLY DESIRABLE (given the fact many of us have agreed to pay the tag for a license) that raw files (I mean RGB + IR) produced by SF8 and SF6 scanners SW become fully compatible. More precisely, my feeling is that the files are OK. It looks as if SF8 is not reading every file type properly, and does not withstand 16 or 32 b files at all.

The attached table illustrates my observations, using OSX 10.6.8, SF6 scanner on Epson 750, SF8 scanner on Nikon 9000 and both version of SF6 hdr and SF6 hdr.

Have a nice WE, Philippe

Dear Philippe,

Unfortunately you are right.
At the moment there is an issue regarding the loading of B&W (16/32bit) HDR files.
Our developers have found the reason for this and it will be fixed in our upcoming update.
It will be released in the next few days.

kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

Good evening Arne, and tank you for your reply.

From your answer, I conclude that you agree with the fact that there is a problem loading 16/32 bits files in SF8.
Now can you please comment on the other point (in red in my table) ? Is there a problem for SF8 hdr to load a 64b file produced by a scan done with SF 6 ?

If you say NO, I must be doing something wrong.

Kind regards, Philippe

Dear Philipp,

We just released the r17 update.
Could you please install that.
I can not really correlate the other things you mentioned.
Especially that Tiff is missing a color channel.
(which one)

kind regards,
Arne
