LaserSoft Imaging

When using the Job Manager in Edit mode, the user cannot select a saved Frame-Set for the current picture. I am required to manually set the input size for each and every picture imported into the Job Manager which also requires waiting for a prescan to be created for each and every picture. This whole process takes much more time than it should. I usually give up trying to use Job Manager at some point after battling with this bug and the other units-crash bug.

I realise that Frame-Set is disabled when using Job Manager because it would allow users to select multiple frames per picture for a multiple picture job. Job Manager is not currently able to do this. I don't need multiple frames per picture though. I just need a single frame that I set up at the beginning which is always different to the one supplied to the SF software by the Nikon scanner.

I'm using SF 5.5.2r17. When is this problem going to be fixed? It really freaks me out sometimes when I'm trying to get real work done with an otherwise nice piece of software.

NOTE.
The Copy/Paste function within Job Manager will NOT copy/paste the **input** frame size. There is also no option to select a saved Frame setting when selecting thumbnails for use within the Job Manager.

This is true!
The samed frames cannot be loaded into a picture from the JobManager when this picture is in Edit mode (shown in large preview). However, all settings but the frame dimension can be applied to all the images of your Job at the moment when you queue them into the Job Manager.
It is that little box which appears when you select images for a Job. You can then select a previously saved setting.

But I (and possibly many other Nikon users) **NEED** to be able to set the Original frame dimensions during selection of the Job Manager pictures so that we don't need to prescan and manually set the original frame dimensions for each and every picture.

Does anyone understand what I am asking for? Am I the only Nikon user who has a problem with this?

Can Lasersoft add the original dimensions to the Job Manager Copy/Paste function? That would solve 90% of the inconvenience and make Job Manager worth using.

Dear Gregory,
you can copy the frame output dimensions of your first edited (and saved) image of your Job Queue. The condition is that you did a preview of - at least - one of your images of the job and saved all settings. While you are still in the Edit mode you SHIFT-click the image(s) that you want to have the same output dimension and click the Copy-button (right of Edit-button). Select "output width" and "output heigth" and the frame dimensions are copied to all highlighted Job thumbnails - without the need for another preview.

It's not the output dimensions that are missing. It's the INPUT (or original) dimensions that are missing. These are the position and size of the frame itself as shown in the preview. These are not saved within the color Settings, and are not available in the Job Manager Copy/Paste dialog either.

this is the part that you cannot pre-determine in the JobManager.
Why?
The JobManager implies that your intention is to determin the settings for each image individually instead of using just one setting for several scans. This, however, implies that you pre-view these individual images in SilverFast and as you can judge the details of an image best in the large preview, you can determine the scan frame best at this point of the workflow.

I have just realised through trial and error that the Slide Overview allows us to select the slides to scan by command- or shift-clicking on the thumbnails (there's nothing about this in the manuals or appendixes though!!). This will help me in my scanning efforts but here's my current scenario as an example.

On my latest roll of film, there are 36 slides.
The first 10 slides were taken with a Tungsten lens adapter which reduced the available light by approx 2 stops.
The remaining 26 slides were taken in bright daylight (without the adapter of course).

I would like to prescan the first of the Tungsten slides, set up the exposure settings (color cast, gradations, etc) using this prescan and then apply the settings (including the original frame dimensions) to those first 10 slides.
I would then like to prescan the first of the daylight slides, set up the exposure settings and apply those settings to the remaining slides.
THEN I would like SF to scan all of the slides using these settings.

Is this a job for Job Manager, or could I do this using just the Slide Overview window? How would you do this?

This is a usually a Job for the JobManager - where I would load two jobs one for each setting:
- load first 10 to job queue > edit one > copy settings > save this job.
- load following 10 to job queue > edit one > copy settings > save this job.
- select "Multi Job..." in main menu of Job Manager (upper left corner). A new dialog appears.
- highlight both job names and hit Start.

You could - however - as well highlight the first 10 images in the overview and do a normal batch scan (to file), then reopen SF > open overview again > highlight the following 10 images > apply corrections in large preview > do a second batch scan (to file).

That's exactly what I want to do ? but I cannot. The original frame dimensions need to be set manually for each and every photo. I would LOVE to Copy/Paste the settings but SF does not provide this simple but useful feature.

The situation I described to you is exactly the situation I am in now. From your response, it would appear that Lasersoft designed Job Manager for people working with varying frame positions on multiple photos. Nothing in SF allows one to configure varying exposures/color settings across multiple sets of photos without previewing each and every photo concerned to set the original frame dimension.

Is it impossible for SF to include the original frame dimensions in the Copy/Paste dialog? This surely is not difficult for the programmers at Lasersoft.

If at all possible, please include the Original frame dimensions in the Copy/Paste dialog for SF v6. It would make Job Manager much more powerful.
