The prescans of my slides have fairly natural colors. If I scan in the 42->24 bit mode, the colors correspond more or less to the prescan. However, in other modes, the look of the final scan differs considerably from the prescan: In the 48 bit HDR color mode, the final scan is very, very dark. In the 48 bit color mode, the final scan has a magenta cast.

Is this normal, or am I making a mistake?

I use SF 5.5.2r08 and a Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED.

Thanks for your answers,
Juerg

Scans in SilverFast HDR mode are very dark

SilverFast 5.5.2 has several options with regard to colour:

1. 42->24bit color
Scans are converted from the internal colour space of the scanner into the standard 24 bit colour space.

2. 48 bit color
Scans are saved into the 48 bit colour space with all corrections that have been chosen inside SilverFast. The final scan should look like the preview.

3. 48 bit HDR Color
Scans will be saved into the uncorrected raw data format. Depending on whether gamma correction will be selected with the output, the resultant scan will look much darker than the preview. This format will not save the corrections from inside SilverFast other than gamma.

Also read the explanation on the advantage of the 48 bit corrected output:
